Grassroots journalism will fail?

The Newsosaur thinks so. Media blogger Alan D. Mutter wrote on June 22 that "doubts are growing about whether we can rely on volunteers to produce credible journalism for a sustainable period of time."

He points to the shuttering of Gannett Blog, where former USA Today journalist Jim Hopkins crowdsourced every hem and haw of the American newspaper giant.

Hopkins said he will stop producing his blog [in June] because he is exhausted by the hours required to tend it, because he is disgusted with invective he says was hurled at him and because he couldn’t earn even $15,000 a year for his trouble.
